Gerald J. Siuta, Ph.D., CLP Dr. Gerald J. Siuta, President, founded Siuta Consulting in 1995. He began his professional career with the Medical Research Division of American Cyanamid Company in 1974 as a synthetic organic chemist preparing novel compounds for the treatment of asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and ulcers. He is a co-inventor on 16 issued United States patents and an author of numerous publications.
In 1981 he moved into Cyanamid's New Product Licensing Department where his responsibilities included identifying early stage licensing opportunities from universities, research institutes and U.S. government laboratories to supplement Cyanamid's medical research programs. Among his many accomplishments, he identified and negotiated licenses for a hypolipidemic agent and several poliovirus vaccine technologies from U.S. universities, a novel anticancer agent from a European academic institution, and tumor selective monoclonal antibodies, DNA clones and transgenic animals from the U.S. government. Dr. Siuta was also involved with the in-licensing of new pharmaceutical products including SUPRAX® cefixime, an oral cephalosporin antibiotic from Fujisawa and tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor from Taiho. Dr. Siuta out-licensed Cyanamid research compounds and technologies that were considered to be outside the scope of the company's strategic intent. Most notably, he licensed Cyanamid's AZMACORT® triamcinolone acetonide aerosol inhaler for the treatment of asthma that provided Cyanamid with more than $6 million in annual royalties.
With more than 27 years of experience in the licensing field, Dr. Siuta has established an extensive network of licensing contacts at pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the United States, Europe and Japan as well as at Technology Transfer Offices in universities and research institutes in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He also has contacts within U.S. government laboratories. Since 2001, Dr. Siuta has been a business development consultant to the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development (TB Alliance), a not-for-profit, product development partnership accelerating the discovery and/or development of new TB drugs that will shorten treatment, be effective against susceptible and resistant strains, be compatible with antiretroviral therapies for those HIV-TB patients currently on such therapies, and improve treatment of latent infection. In 2005, he negotiated terms for a partnership with Bayer HealthCare AG to coordinate a global clinical trial program to study the potential of moxifloxacin to shorten the standard 6-month treatment of tuberculosis. On September 13, 2006, the Licensing Executives Society Industry/University and Government Laboratory Transactions Industry Sector presented the TB Alliance and Bayer its Deals of Distinction Award which recognizes worthy transactions involving licensing and transfer of intellectual property and promote creative and innovative solutions to business issues. In addition, the TB Alliance-Bayer deal was one of six finalists for the Scrip 2006 Best Partnership Alliance Award. Scrip Awards are designed to recognize new standards of excellence and celebrate the very best achievements that reflect cutting-edge science and the intellectually exciting and socially rewarding nature of the industry. The Best Partnership Alliance award recognizes the importance of partnerships involving pharmaceutical and/or biotech companies, focusing on deals that require strong strategic input from both partners, are mutually beneficial, hold promise to address an unmet medical need and demonstrate strategic potential as well as an innovative business model. See Notable Achievements for further details and to read the LES and TB Alliance press releases. Dr. Siuta has made numerous presentations on the licensing of new technologies and products to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries at conferences sponsored by the Licensing Executives Society (LES) and the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). He has also been invited to speak about the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development at LES, AUTM, the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) International Convention, the McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health, the National Institutes of Health, the Centre for Management of Intellectual Property in Health Research and Development (MIHR), the Africa Genome Education Institute and Law Seminars International. Dr. Siuta received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry from Hunter College of The City University of New York and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Fordham University. He is a member of the Licensing Executives Society where he served on the Board of Trustees (2005-2007), the Association of University Technology Managers where he served on the Board of Trustees as Vice President for Affiliate Members (2003-2005), the American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi - The Scientific Research Society of North America and Phi Lambda Upsilon - The National Honorary Chemical Society. He has also served on the Advisory Board of Technology Transfer Conferences, Inc.
